From SHirsch at somervillema.gov Wed Sep 2 09:19:54 2009 From: SHirsch at somervillema.gov (Stephanie Hirsch) Date: Wed Sep 2 05:45:01 2009 Subject: [Ward7resistat] Hodgkins-Curtin Park Renovation Update Message-ID: <05E737CD9BF1C7479D7F1A4A881272EB2E6135@exchange.somerville.ma.us> Hello West Somerville residents and parents/caretakers - Here's an update on the Hodgkins-Curtin park renovation. (This is the park on Holland Street next to Traffic and Parking). Also note that one or more of the play structures from Hodgkins-Curtin will be moved to Central Hill at some point during demolition, with a date TBA. ************** Dear Hodgkins-Curtin Park Community, The construction of Hodgkins-Curtin Park will begin after Labor Day. The playground will be closed to the public beginning Tuesday, September 8th. This notice will also be posted in the park. The contractor will first put up security fencing and rodent bait traps, before beginning demolition. Rodent control is a precautionary measure required at any City construction project. While we do not anticipate any problems, it is a good idea for park abutters to securely cover trash cans for the first few weeks of construction. City ordinances limit construction hours from 7am to 7pm, Monday-Saturday. The contractor will be parking vehicles on the construction site as much as possible and will use the site for storage of equipment and materials. Every effort will be made to keep traffic and parking disturbances to a minimum during the construction period. This park renovation's project manager is Arn Franzen, Director of Parks and Open Space, afranzen@somervillema.gov, 617-625-6600 x2500. Also please take a look at the website of the West Somerville Neighborhood Association (http://WestSomerville.org). The Association works to promote quality of life issues in West Somerville. ***************** Hi Everybody, I just wanted to make sure you all knew that Somerville and Medford residents can audit one Tufts lecture course per semester for $250 -- this seems like an incredible bargain compared to the $3,050 it would cost to take a course for credit or the $600 audit fee for non-residents. The Tufts faculty is certainly one of the best in the world, and the chance to attend lectures every week from some of brightest living minds (e.g. Prof. Daniel Dennett ) just a few minutes walk from home seems pretty remarkable... You can learn more about the program from this link: http://gradstudy.tufts.edu/1176904809740/GradStudy-Page-gradstudy2ws_117 7683266971.html And here's a page to search for the courses they offer: https://webcenter.studentservices.tufts.edu/courses/main.asp Basically you fill out a form and get it approved by the Grad school and the instructor within the first two weeks of classes -- but you better hurry up -- school starts tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8! Thanks to Steve Cronin for recently pointing out this excellent community benefit...
