Community Updates Spring Hill Garden For those have walked lately on Belmont Street, you have been able to witness the construction and planting of the "Spring Hill Garden" at the Cambridge Health Alliance School of Nursing property. With material support from Urban Farming, a non-profit in Detroit committed to creating an abundance of food for people in need who were funded by Triscuit to create 50 gardens across the U.S. this year. Our proposal was selected as one of the 50 back in April! Volunteers and neighbors have built raised beds which were filled in May. They were planted with tomatoes, kale, collards, peppers, lettuce, basil, and squash plants. Seeds for carrots, beets and beans were added. Since then a few gift plants of jilo and eggplant and marigolds have joined the garden. These past two weeks, fresh produce was delivered to the food pantry in our building that serves patients, that will help to distribute the food to individuals-zucchini, basil and collards. The tomatoes are getting ripe and the rest of the garden has survived the heat. Watch for an open garden day later in the season-or just check it out as you go by. If you would like to volunteer, or have hardy perennials to donate for our border, please contact Lisa Brukilacchio, Somerville Community Health Agenda at 617-591-6940 or call Joel Bennett, local Urban Farming contact at 617-776-7769.
