OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GREEN LINE EXTENXION (GLX) DESIGN
WOKRING GROUP: MassDOT is assembling a group of local citizens and MBTA,
municipal, and business representatives to form a working group to
advise on the design of new stations proposed for the neighborhoods of
Brickbottom, Gilman Square, Lowell Street, Ball Square, College Avenue,
and Union Square. MassDOT is asking interested individuals who live in
and are familiar with these neighborhoods, and are MBTA users to apply

1,000 GREAT PLACES NOMINATION: The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is
inviting residents from across the state to nominate their favorite
places. The nominations will be considered for a final list of 1,000
Great Places in Massachusetts to be announced in May. This initiative
will celebrate what is unique about Massachusetts, its communities, and
its people. The deadline for nominations is April 15. Nominate your

MYSTIC RIVER COMMUNITY WALK, SUN. 4/18, 10:00AM, BLESSING OF THE BAY
BOATHOUSE (32 SHORE DR.): Fitness Challenge Teams Bad to the Bone and
SomFit invite community members to join them in a walk along the banks
of the Mystic River in a 2.25-mile loop, beginning and ending at the
Blessing of the Bay Boathouse, 32 Shore Drive. Feel free to bring your
family and friends. Dogs that are leashed (no retractable leads,
please), licensed and who enjoy the company of people and other dogs are
welcome. This is a Fitness Challenge Event: Participants in the Mayor's
Fitness Challenge can earn a point for themselves and for their teams at
the Mystic River Community Walk! Additional information is available

BLUEBACK HERRING RIVER ROUTE COMMUNITY MEETING, WED. 4/21, 6:30PM,
ELIZABETH PEABODY HOUSE (277 BROADWAY): All interested residents and
stakeholders are invited to attend a community meeting to review
proposed logo and signage options for the "Blueback Herring River
Route," planned to connect Foss Park to Shore Drive. The meeting free
and open to the public. The meeting will also provide an update on the
improvement plans for the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse grounds. These
projects are made possible by a grant from the Massachusetts

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT 2010 CENSUS IS TODAY! 4/16: Mayor Joseph A.
Curtatone wants to remind all Somerville residents that the 2010 Federal
Census forms must be submitted via mail by Friday, April 16, 2010.
TODAY! Households not returning the form by this date will be visited
by Federal Census Officials beginning on May 1, 2010, who will conduct
door-to-door collections in municipalities nationwide. The current
average national response rate is 68%, with Somerville's rate standing
at 61%. For more information on Somerville's 2010 Census efforts, please

FLU SEASON SURVEY: The City of Somerville's Health Department would like
your input on the past flu season to inform how the City will coordinate
responses to future public health challenges. Please take a few minutes

ONE CITY, ONE BOOK FILM FESTIVAL, SAT. 4/24, CENTRAL LIBRARY (79
HIGHLAND AVE): All interested community members are invited to an
upcoming event related to the City's "One City, One Book" campaign,
based on the book The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, a collection
of related stories about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam
War. The film festival will feature "Good Morning Vietnam," "The Quiet

2ND ANNUAL SHAPE UP SOMERVILLE ROAD RACE, SUN., 5/2, 10:30AM, BEGINNING

Road Race with half-mile children's fun run for youth ages 12 years and
younger will begin at the Somerville High School and conclude with a
community BBQ. The adult race will begin on the SHS/City Hall
Concourse, travel in a loop to finish back at the Concourse.
Registration is $5 for children, and $20 for adults, and includes a
t-shirt, All-America City water bottle, and "Mayor's Fitness Buck," at

ANNUAL SOMERVILLE SPRING CLEANUP, SAT. MAY 8th, 10:00AM-12:00PM,
LOCATIONS CITYWIDE: The annual Somerville Spring Clean-Up will be held
on Saturday, May 8th at locations throughout the City. The annual
cleanup will be held in partnership with Groundwork Somerville. A rain
date has been set for Sunday, May 9th. Volunteers should meet a ward
captain at 10:00 am at the following locations throughout Somerville:
* Ward 1: Cross Street Senior Center, 165 Broadway; AND Capuano
School
* Ward 2: Union Square Parking Lot at SCAT Building
* Ward 3: City Hall Concourse, 93 Highland Ave.
* Ward 4: Blessing of the Bay Boat House, Shore Drive
* Ward 5: Community Path at Cedar Street
* Ward 6: Davis Square, Statue Park
* Ward 7: Teele Square Fire Station
Participants will receive free t-shirts, breakfast, All-America City
water bottles, and a Mayor's Fitness Challenge Buck - it is an
opportunity for Mayor's Fitness Challenge participants to earn an extra
point toward their team total. Clean-Up participants are invited to
attend the 4th Annual SomerGreen Festival and Barbecue at Nunziato
Field, at Summer and Putnam Streets, and the Growing Center on Vinal
Avenue. The 2010 Spring Clean-Up will also mark the launch of
SomerServe, an effort to promote service and volunteerism in Somerville.

MYSTIC RIVER HERRING RUN & PADDLE, SUN. 5/16, BLESSING OF THE BAY
BOATHOUSE (32 SHORE DR): The Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA)
is holding the 14th Annual Mystic River Herring Run and Paddle on
Sunday, May 16th.. 5K run/walk begins at 9am; 3, 9 or 12 mile paddle
begins at 10:30am. Register today! Run on a USATF certified course along
the Mystic River bike path, or kayak and follow the herring up the river
toward the Mystic Lakes, along a 3, 9 or 12-mile course. Come to the
event and check out the food and music and learn about other local
organizations while enjoying the beauty of the river. For more

CITY RESPONDS TO PARKING SOLUTIONS TASK FORCE: Mayor Curtatone convened
the PSTF - comprised of Aldermen, business and artist representatives,
residents, and municipal staff - following several changes to the City's
parking regulations. In January, the PSTF submitted a letter, outlining
improvements. Acting Director of Traffic and Parking, Bob Bradley
responded to PSTF recommendations, identifying short- and long-term
solutions, including: Updating the Business Permit Parking program,
creating an Artist Permit program, implementing additional permits for
non-resident landlords, extending the time limit for extended visitor
permits; and investigating potentially expanding online permitting
