We will examine and translate documents sent home from schools and learn about school procedures. We will discuss how to use English to schedule and conduct meetings with teachers, administrators, and guidance counselors to advocate for children. The course will also invite parents to discuss their particular challenges in interacting with schools and we will help them overcome these challenges. A goal of the course will be to initiate parents into the culture of schools in the United States so that, if they choose, they can participate in parent organizations and learn more about after-school activities, homework clubs, and other opportunities for involvement. Finally, we will discuss school-readiness for young children and strategies for fostering bilingualism. *Instructor: *The class is taught by Rusty Carlock, a doctoral student at Harvard in the Graduate School of Education. Rusty is also an experienced ESOL teacher in the United States and El Salvador, with eight years experience teaching a variety of age groups in public and private schools. He has a special affinity for working with immigrants of all backgrounds, to welcome them by providing opportunities for them to help themselves and their families through education. *When and Where*: The class will take place at the Mystic Activity Center, in the Mystic Housing Developments, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30-11:30 am beginning on January 25. *How to Register: * People interested in the topic based classes or The Welcome Project's beginner and intermediate English classes should attend a Welcome Project Information Session.
