Thanks to all who could attend. Also, attached is an updated task list. As with the last task list report, the same information appears twice, with one report sorted by topic and the other sorted by primary person (feel free to let me know what needs changing!) Now for a summary of the meeting take-aways. You can find meeting slides and other meeting material on the Tufts resource page at: https://wikis.uit.tufts.edu/confluence/display/scz/Meeting+Notes PARTICIPANTS: The meeting was attended by Executive Steering Committee members from each of the stakeholder groups. Though we don't yet have any official resident representatives, there was one resident who attended as well. Students from the Tufts' field course who have been working on the canvassing project attended and quite a few other individuals and organizations also attended. RESIDENT ENGAGEMENT: In the first half of the meeting, we discussed a proposed plan for resident engagement and the summer canvassing project. The Tufts' student team did a great job of presenting the feedback they had collected and their thoughts on how we could proceed. Their proposal included a plan for kick off events, for training of resident interviewers, and for a data collection effort. While some people emphasized the importance of moving forward with an ambitious plan for collecting data, others expressed some worry about moving forward quickly. It was suggested that the team try to scale back the goals for the summer a bit. Other suggestions included finding a way to use Bunker Hill Community College students and to use summer youth, who work in the City as part of a summer jobs program. The team will develop a revised plan that takes into account the feedback. DISCUSSION OF FY11: In the second hour of the meeting, we had an extended discussion of models for organizing the Mystic project going forward. The Tufts team shared a presentation on some other HCZ replication models throughout the country. This presentation demonstrated the differences between the replication examples in terms of structure, funding, leadership, etc. Next, I shared some other models of coordinated service delivery. Finally, I shared the proposal I had given the Mayor and the Superintendent for the creation of an umbrella organization that would work to raise funds, distribute funds, analyze data, and increase coordination of service delivery. The organization could take the form of a community foundation, a city agency, or a separate non-profit. A number of people expressed concerns with this proposal. After some debate, it was suggested that we convene a working group that could discuss options and a mission for the project in FY11. The Mayor said that he needed to get some direction by May 15th, just before the City's budget is submitted to the Board of Aldermen. I will be asking for dates in a subsequent e-mail. OTHER UPDATES: In addition to these two longer discussion, the meeting included updates on funding solicitation, data analysis efforts going on within the schools, meetings of the early childhood and out-of-school groups, and meetings among non-profit organizations. Please refer to the task list for the current status of each of these, or feel free to check in with me with specific questions. Thanks again for everyone continuing engagement in this planning and coordinating effort. Please set aside Friday, April 16th, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The location is TBA. Please note that this is just to think through options for a structure and mission. The Executive Steering Committee, the Mayor, and the Superintendent will need to weigh in as well. I will be following up with all Executive Steering Committee members to get your input and we will need to schedule another meeting for May. Also, many people have emphasized the importance of soliciting resident input. At the April 16th meeting, I suggest that we develop one or more proposals for a process of vetting a mission statement with different stakeholders. Thanks, everyone.
