I'm sending information on a few follow-up steps. MAILING LIST PROGRAM AND CONTACT LIST: I subscribed you all to a mailman mailing list program that runs on a City server. You are receiving this message through that mailing list. You should all be able to post to the mailing list by sending an e-mail to mystic@lists.somerville.ma.us. I will send separately a contact list that shows names of people I have subscribed to the list - there are 56 members currently. Feel free to either post information to the list yourselves or to send it to me. If you send it to me, I can regularly batch together some material and send it to the whole list. Also note, if anyone notices a problem with an e-mail address or phone number, or if anyone would like to be added or taken off the list, please let me know. TWO SURVEYS TO COMPLETE: Linked here are two short surveys. Please complete BOTH. http://MysticFeedback.speedsurvey.com This survey is anonymous. It asks for your feedback on the meeting. This will be helpful for planning future meetings. http://MysticSignUp.speedsurvey.com This survey is not anonymous. It asks for your name and for your availability to attend meetings and for any next steps you plan to take in the next month. NEXT STEPS: I will distribute more notes on the meeting when I have them pulled together. However, the immediate next steps discussed were as follows: *Next Steering Committee: Schedule a second Steering/Planning meeting for late January (possible dates are included in the above "SignUp" survey). *Two Working Groups: Convene two working groups for earlier in January. The PROCESS GROUP will meet to come up with two proposals for decision-making and/or governance for the project going forward. The CENSUS/DOCUMENTATION GROUP will discuss data collection, consolidation, and measurement for the project. Both groups will report out to the whole planning group at a second meeting in January (possible dates for the working group are also included in the above "SignUp" survey). *Tour of Healey: Set up a tour of the Healey for interested members of this planning group (I will work with Mike on this in January) *Mailing List: Set up a mailing list program (this has been done) PRESS RELEASE: Likely tomorrow, I will be circulating a draft press release for the initiative. I'll be asking for your comments and quotes. MORE MYSTIC INFORMATION: The Harlem Children's Zone was featured on 60 minutes. Take a look here: http://unca-acf.org/?p=624 Thanks again, everyone, for your participation yesterday! Let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions. With the goal being to assist with eliminating the achievement gap between its student populations (low income, middle and upper income students). The potential results of these efforts could changed the lives of many students in a positive way. Such efforts to close the achievement gaps amongst student populations should be celebrated and applauded. The achievement gaps in our society exist soly because of economic inequality. In our society their is a basic theory that middle-class and upperclass children enter adolescence with a better understanding of how an educational working model operates. Such as what they can achieve and the potential rewards for working hard in school. As for low income or poor children, they tend to come from more disorganized homes that don?t have such a structure or understanding of how a successful educational working model operates. But my having a Mystic children's zone it lends itself to balancing the playing field. Selvin L.
